Skin & Nail Care

Professional foot care designed to keep your feet healthy, comfortable, and functioning at their best—helping you maintain mobility, independence, and confidence.

The Problem

As we age, caring for our feet can become increasingly difficult.

Simple tasks such as trimming toenails, managing thickened nails, or treating dry, cracked skin may become challenging due to reduced flexibility, vision, or mobility, arthritis, or underlying health conditions.

For others, thickened nails, fungal nails, dry skin, or ongoing foot maintenance requirements can make walking uncomfortable and affect day-to-day activities.

Many people attempt to manage these problems themselves or seek assistance from non-clinical providers. While this may be appropriate in some situations, it can become more challenging when thickened nails, diabetes, reduced sensation, poor circulation, or reduced mobility are present.

Left unmanaged, these issues can affect comfort and mobility, and increase the risk of more serious foot complications.

Our Skin & Nail Care services are designed to help maintain healthy, comfortable feet and prevent minor problems from becoming larger ones.

Treatment may include:

  • Toenail cutting and maintenance

  • Nail thinning using specialised podiatry drills
  • Cracked heel management
  • Fungal nail management
  • Skin condition assessment
  • Diabetic foot maintenance

  • Footwear advice
  • Preventative foot care

Masterton Foot Clinic provides both Podiatry and Foot Hygienist services, allowing patients to access the most appropriate level of care for their needs.

Many patients simply require routine foot maintenance, while others benefit from the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment expertise provided by our podiatry team. By offering both services within the same clinic, we can provide ongoing preventative care while ensuring podiatric support is readily available whenever required.

Our Foot Hygienists utilise specialised podiatry equipment and techniques to safely manage routine foot care concerns while working under the supervision and support of our podiatry team.

Where more complex problems are identified, including painful corns, ingrown toenails, wounds, infections, foot pain, diabetes-related concerns, or other conditions requiring diagnosis and treatment, our podiatrists are available to provide assessment and management.

Our goal is to help keep your feet healthy, comfortable, and functioning well so you can continue doing the things you enjoy.

Why Masterton Foot Clinic

Masterton Foot Clinic is a Podiatry-led clinic focused on helping people maintain healthy feet, mobility, and independence throughout life.

Our podiatrists assess and manage a wide range of foot and lower-limb conditions, from injuries and biomechanical problems to diabetes, neurological conditions, minor surgery, orthotics, bracing, and rehabilitation.

Alongside our Podiatry services, we offer Foot Hygienist appointments for patients who require routine foot maintenance and ongoing preventative care.

This integrated model allows patients to access affordable maintenance care while remaining connected to a clinical team that can manage more complex foot health concerns when required.

Unlike nail bars or non-clinical foot care providers, our Foot Hygienists work within a podiatry clinic and under the supervision and support of our registered podiatry team.

Our Foot Hygienists complete NZQA-recognised Level 4 Health Care Assistant training, alongside extensive in-house training and external professional education focused on foot health, skin care, nail care, infection control, and patient safety.

Feet are uniquely vulnerable to infection and injury, particularly for people with diabetes, circulation concerns, reduced sensation, thickened nails, or reduced ability to care for their own feet.

All instruments used within our clinic are processed and sterilised on-site using healthcare-grade sterilisation procedures. This helps minimise the risk of infection and cross-contamination while ensuring treatment is delivered in a safe clinical environment.

Our Podiatry team regularly manages complications arising from poorly controlled foot conditions, including cellulitis, fungal infections, ingrown toenails, and skin breakdown. By combining professional foot care with clinical oversight and access to podiatric expertise, we aim to help patients maintain healthy feet while minimising unnecessary risks.

This team-based approach allows us to provide the right level of care at the right time, helping patients maintain healthy feet, mobility, and independence.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a Foot Hygienist and a Podiatrist?

A Foot Hygienist is trained to provide routine foot care and maintenance, including nail trimming, thickened-nail reduction, skin care, and general foot health support.

Our Foot Hygienists complete NZQA-recognised Level 4 Health Care Assistant training, alongside extensive in-house training and external professional education specific to foot care.

Podiatrists complete a three-year university degree and are registered health professionals trained to diagnose, assess, and treat a wide range of foot and lower-limb conditions. This includes managing injuries, prescribing orthotics and braces, performing minor surgical procedures, diagnosing skin and nail conditions, and managing complex medical presentations such as diabetes, neurological conditions, and foot pain.

At Masterton Foot Clinic, our Foot Hygienists work under the supervision and support of our Podiatry team. This means patients can access routine foot care safely and affordably, while having direct access to podiatric expertise whenever more advanced assessment or treatment is required.

What training does a Foot Hygienist have?
Our Foot Hygienists complete NZQA-recognised Level 4 Health Care Assistant training, alongside extensive in-house training and external professional education focused on foot health, skin care, nail care, infection control, and patient safety.
When should I see a Podiatrist instead?
If you have significant pain, diabetes, circulation concerns, foot deformity, recurring infections, wounds, or a condition requiring diagnosis and treatment planning, a podiatrist is usually the best place to start.
How often should I have foot care?
This varies depending on your needs. Some patients attend every few months, while others benefit from more regular maintenance.
Can you help with thickened fungal nails?
Yes. We provide nail reduction, management advice, and can discuss treatment options such as Lunula Laser, where appropriate.
Do you treat diabetic patients?
Yes. We regularly provide foot care and foot health assessments for people living with diabetes.
Will treatment hurt?
Most routine skin and nail care treatments are comfortable and well-tolerated. If you have particularly sensitive feet, we can adjust treatment accordingly.
Why is sterilisation important?
Feet can be vulnerable to infection, particularly in people with diabetes, poor circulation, or reduced sensation. Using properly sterilised instruments helps minimise the risk of infection and cross-contamination.
