Fungal Nail Infection
Fungal nail infections are one of the most common nail conditions we assess and manage at Masterton Foot Clinic. They can cause thickened, discoloured, brittle, or distorted nails and may affect your comfort, confidence, and ability to wear certain footwear.
Although fungal nail infections are rarely dangerous, they can become increasingly difficult to treat if left unmanaged. Our role is to determine whether a nail is truly affected by fungus and help you choose the treatment approach that best suits your needs and goals.
What is a fungal nail infection?
A fungal nail infection, also known as Onychomycosis, occurs when fungi invade the nail plate or the tissue beneath it.
Over time, the nail may become thicker, more brittle, yellow, white, or brown in colour, and may gradually separate from the nail bed.
Fungal nail infections are considered treatable, although successful treatment often requires patience and realistic expectations. Healthy toenails grow slowly, meaning visible improvement may take many months.
Symptoms
Common symptoms include:
- Thickened toenails.
- Yellow, white, or brown discolouration.
- Brittle or crumbly nails.
- Nails lifting from the nail bed.
- Distorted nail shape.
- Debris beneath the nail.
- Difficulty cutting the nail.
- Pain or discomfort in footwear.
Some fungal infections cause very little discomfort, while others significantly affect walking, sports, or footwear comfort.
Causes
Fungal nail infections develop when fungi gain access beneath or within the nail.
Contributing factors include:
- Athlete's Foot.
- Warm, moist footwear.
- Nail trauma.
- Increasing age.
- Diabetes.
- Poor circulation.
- Reduced immunity.
- Repeated sporting activities.
Many infections begin after a seemingly minor injury to the nail, allowing fungi to establish beneath the nail plate.
When should you see a podiatrist?
We recommend an assessment if:
- Your nail has become thickened or discoloured.
- You are having difficulty cutting your nails.
- The nail is becoming painful.
- The appearance of the nail concerns you.
- Over-the-counter treatments have not helped.
- You have diabetes, poor circulation, or reduced sensation.
Not every thick or discoloured nail is caused by fungus. Trauma, psoriasis, eczema, and other nail conditions can produce a very similar appearance. Establishing the correct diagnosis is an important first step before beginning treatment.
Why accurate diagnosis matters
Many people assume every thickened nail is fungal.
In reality, several different nail conditions can closely resemble a fungal infection.
Confirming the diagnosis should be considered before commencing oral antifungal medication, particularly because treatment courses are lengthy and not every abnormal nail is caused by fungus.
Where appropriate, we offer rapid in-clinic antigen testing for dermatophyte fungi, with results available during your appointment. In some situations, laboratory testing may also be recommended to confirm the diagnosis or guide treatment decisions.
How we treat fungal nail infection

There is no single treatment that is appropriate for every fungal nail infection.
At Masterton Foot Clinic, we tailor treatment to the severity of the infection, the number of nails involved, your general health, and your treatment goals. In many cases, combining treatment approaches provides the best opportunity for success.
Depending on your presentation, treatment may include:
- Professional nail reduction and thinning (debridement).
- Chemical debridement, where appropriate.
- Topical antifungal treatments.
- Discussion regarding oral antifungal medication through your GP where appropriate.
- Lunula Laser treatment.
- Temporary nail removal (nail avulsion) in carefully selected cases.
- Footwear and hygiene advice.
- Management of associated Athlete's Foot.
- Long-term monitoring.
Our goal is to provide realistic, evidence-based advice on the likely benefits, limitations, and expected timeframes of each treatment option, helping you make an informed decision about your care.
