Wairarapa Ingrown Nail Clinic: Why We Built a Dedicated Service

Ingrown toenails are one of the most common conditions we treat—and one of the most unnecessarily endured.
Many people live with recurring pain, swelling, infection, and difficulty wearing shoes for months, sometimes even years. Some try to manage the problem themselves, while others simply assume they'll have to put up with it.
The good news is that most ingrown toenails can be treated successfully, and often much more simply than people expect.
Not Every Ingrown Toenail Needs Surgery
One of the biggest misconceptions we hear is that every ingrown toenail requires surgery.
Fortunately, that's not the case.
Many first-time or mild ingrown toenails respond well to conservative treatment, including careful nail care, pressure relief, footwear advice, and education about preventing recurrence.
Our philosophy is simple:
We recommend the least invasive treatment that is likely to achieve the best long-term outcome.
When Surgery Becomes the Best Option
For nails that continue to recur, become repeatedly infected, or significantly affect your quality of life, a Partial Nail Avulsion (PNA) with phenolisation is often the most predictable long-term solution.
The procedure is performed under local anaesthetic, usually takes around 30 minutes, and allows you to walk out of the clinic the same day.
For appropriately selected patients, it offers an excellent chance of permanently preventing that section of the nail from ingrowing again.
Why We Created the Wairarapa Ingrown Nail Clinic
As our experience in managing ingrown toenails grew, we recognised the value of creating a dedicated service focused entirely on their assessment, treatment, and long-term management.
The Wairarapa Ingrown Nail Clinic isn't a separate business—it's a specialised service within Masterton Foot Clinic that brings together experienced clinicians, refined treatment protocols, patient education, and structured follow-up care.
By concentrating this expertise in one place, we can provide consistent, evidence-informed care while ensuring every patient understands their options before making a decision.
More Than Just a Procedure
Treating an ingrown toenail isn't simply about removing part of the nail.
It's about understanding why it developed, reducing the risk of it returning, supporting healing, and helping you get back to wearing shoes, exercising, working, and enjoying everyday life without pain.
Many of our patients tell us the same thing after treatment:
"I wish I'd done this sooner."
Don't Put Up With It
If you're living with an ingrown toenail, you don't have to simply tolerate it.
Whether it's your first episode or something you've struggled with for years, we'd be happy to assess your nail, explain the available treatment options, and help you decide which approach is right for you.
Sometimes reassurance and conservative care are all that's needed.
Sometimes surgery offers the best long-term solution.
Our role is to help you understand the difference.
