Custom Orthotics vs. Chemist Insoles: What's the Real Difference?

It's one of the most common questions we're asked:

"Can't I just buy an insole from the chemist?"

The answer is: sometimes.

A quality prefabricated insole can be an excellent option for some people. The real question isn't which insole should I buy? It is what's causing my pain?

Understanding the problem comes first. Choosing the right treatment comes second.

Not Everyone Needs Custom Orthotics

One of the biggest misconceptions about podiatry is that everyone leaves with a pair of custom orthotics.

That's simply not true.

Depending on your condition, treatment may include:

  • Footwear advice
  • Exercises and rehabilitation
  • Shockwave Therapy
  • Bracing
  • Foot Mobilisation Therapy (FMT)
  • Orthotic therapy

Our goal isn't to prescribe orthotics. It's to recommend the treatment that's most likely to help you achieve your goals.

So What's the Difference?

Think of it like buying medication.

You wouldn't usually choose medication before understanding the diagnosis.

Over-the-counter insoles are designed to suit a broad range of people and can provide excellent cushioning and comfort.

Custom Foot Orthoses are individually prescribed following a comprehensive assessment. They're designed to alter how forces are distributed through your feet and lower limbs where appropriate, helping reduce stress on injured tissues and improve movement.

The right option depends on the person—not simply the product.

When Are Custom Orthotics Worth Considering?

Custom orthotics may be appropriate if:

  • Pain persists despite simpler treatments.
  • You experience recurrent injuries.
  • Your foot structure requires more individualised support.
  • You're aiming to return to sport or higher levels of activity.

Assessment Comes First

Rather than asking:

"Do I need orthotics?"

We encourage people to ask:

"What's causing my pain, and what's the best way to treat it?"

Sometimes that's a quality prefabricated insole.

Sometimes it's custom orthotics.

Sometimes it's something entirely different.

Our role is to understand the problem, explain your options, and help you choose the treatment that's right for you.
